Scoliosis Assessment and Management now at Spring Physio Gym

We are pleased to now offer treatment and management of Scoliosis at Spring Physio Gym.

In March this year, Fiona took a course from the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS) Concept by RIGO from International teacher and expert in the field of Scoliosis Rebecca Harding.

The course was highly informative, practical, and enlightening about the specifics and nuances of managing mostly idiopathic adolescent onset scoliosis.

Scoliosis is defined as a “three dimensional torsional deformity of the spine and trunk”. It is most commonly Idiopathic, (80% of cases) meaning it is of unknown cause, and most often presents during the Adolescent Growth period. (80% of Idiopathic Scoliosis).

Treatment is based on a thorough Initial subjective and objective assessment and evaluation of the spine both clinically and with a specially ordered EOS Xray.

Recommendations are made following the Guidelines produced by SOSORT (International Scientific Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation), and the SRS (Scoliosis Research Society) and importantly follow the patient centred care approach of the BSPTS (Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School). This may include conservative physiotherapy management, bracing and in some cases, surgery may be indicated.

The physiotherapy component of Scoliosis management is not intended to reverse or straighten the curve, but to stop the progression of the curve, improve aesthetic and body image, and lessen any pain associated with the curve with an aim to improving quality of life, and in some cases, preventing the necessity of surgery.

We will be using PSSE (Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercise) methods, which are based on the principles from Katherina Schroth and Christa Lehnert- Schroth and further developed and updated by Dr Manuel Rigo, (founder of BSPTS) based on clinical experience and scientific evidence.

We will aim to work collaboratively with other specialists, including orthopaedic surgeons, psychologists and orthotists that do specialised bracing for scoliosis if and when appropriate, as well as communicating with your existing GP and medical specialists.

Already we have found working with this population tremendously rewarding as we work together to better understand this condition and improve the quality of life of those effected.
